Initial Consultation
Week 1Your journey starts with an initial consultation with one of our experienced surgeons. You will need a GP referral for this appointment. We will discuss your weight loss goals, medical history, and determine the best weight loss option for you.
Comprehensive Evaluation
Weeks 2-6Complete medical assessment including blood tests, imaging studies, and consultations with our multidisciplinary team to ensure you are ready for the next steps.
Pre-Surgery Preparation
Weeks 6-84-6 weeks prior – your pre-operative assessment with Specialist Physician. 2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric dietitian. 2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric psychologist. 1 week prior – a consultation with the pre-admission nurse of the hospital. 1 week prior – a final consultation with your surgeon.
Surgery Day
Day of SurgeryMinimally invasive procedure performed by two fellowship trained surgeons using advanced laparoscopic and/or robotic technology. Your operation will give you the ability to control your weight in a way you never could before. However, your operation is just the beginning of the journey of long-term success in controlling your weight.
Ongoing Care & Lifelong Support
OngoingIn the first year after operation we have a specific program in which you will be seen by your surgeon, nurse, exercise professional and dietitian for multiple appointments. We will be supervising your weight loss and issuing guidance and help during this time. It is vital that you attend all your appointments and particularly all your dietitian appointments. 7-10 days post op – Post-operative appointment with LapSurgery Australia's Nurse. 2-3 weeks post op – Consultation with Dietitian. 5-6 weeks post op – Surgeon review. 2.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian and Exercise Professional. 4-5 months post op – Surgeon review. 6 months post op (for gastric bypass) – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test. 6.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian. 12 months post op – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test.
Your Reflux and Swallowing Specialists
Manometry and pH testing are performed and reported by our upper gastrointestinal surgeons, who also perform the anti reflux and hiatus hernia surgery the results are used to plan. That means the surgeon reading your test is the surgeon who will discuss what it means for you, without a referral on to somebody else.

Manometry and pH Testing Questions, Answered
A test that measures how well the muscles of your oesophagus, the tube from your throat to your stomach, squeeze and relax when you swallow, and how well the valve at the bottom opens and closes. A thin catheter records the pressures while you take small sips of water. It is the standard test for swallowing problems and is required before anti reflux surgery.
It is uncomfortable rather than painful. The nose is numbed with anaesthetic gel and most people feel a brief urge to gag as the catheter passes, which settles within a minute. You are awake throughout, breathe normally and can drive home afterwards. There is no sedation, so no need for someone to collect you.
A fine probe placed through the nose into the lower oesophagus records acid exposure over a full day and night. You go home with it in place, eat normally, press a button when you have symptoms and return the next day. It tells us whether your symptoms are actually caused by acid reflux, which matters a great deal before recommending surgery.
A referral from your GP or specialist is needed for the test to be billed to Medicare. It also gives us your history and the question your doctor wants answered. If you do not have a referral, use the GP referral form on this page or ask your GP to send one, and we will contact you to book.
Manometry and pH testing attract a Medicare rebate when referred, and any out of pocket amount is confirmed when you book. Testing is billed separately from any consultation or surgery that follows. We provide a full written quote at booking.
The traces are analysed by your surgeon, and results are discussed with you at a follow up appointment, usually within one to two weeks of the test. A report is sent to your referring doctor at the same time.
