Your Balloon Team

The balloon is placed by our bariatric surgeons, so if it turns out you need more than a balloon, the same team can offer the sleeve or bypass without sending you elsewhere. Around the balloon sits a six month program with our dietitians, physician and psychologist, because the balloon gives you a head start and the program is what makes the weight stay off.

Your Questions About the Gastric Balloon, Answered

The balloon takes up space in your stomach, so you feel full after a small meal and stay full for longer. That makes it much easier to eat less while you build new habits. It is a soft, water filled balloon that sits in the stomach for about 16 weeks and then passes out naturally.

No. The Allurion balloon is the only gastric balloon that needs no surgery, no endoscopy and no anaesthetic to place or remove. You swallow it as a capsule in a 20 minute appointment and walk out afterwards. Older balloons had to be placed and removed by endoscopy under sedation.

$7,900, which includes the balloon, placement and the six month program with our dietitians, physician and psychologist. Private health insurance does not cover the balloon. We provide a full written quote at your consultation.

The balloon is for adults with a BMI of 27 or more. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have had previous stomach or oesophageal surgery. If your BMI is 35 or more, surgery will usually give you a bigger and longer lasting result, and we will tell you that honestly at your consultation.

Nausea, cramps and bloating in the first few days are common and settle with the medicines we give you. Serious problems are rare but can include the balloon needing early removal by endoscopy, or in very rare cases a blockage or damage to the stomach that needs surgery. We go through the full list with you before you decide, and you have direct access to our team throughout.

It can, which is why the balloon comes with a six month program that runs past the day it leaves. The balloon gives you 16 weeks of feeling full while you change how you eat, and the program helps you hold those changes. Patients who follow the program keep most of the weight off. If you regain, the sleeve and bypass remain available to you.

We consult in Dandenong North, Berwick, Frankston, Cranbourne and Warragul. Book online, call (03) 9760 2777 or leave your details on this page.
