Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our general surgery services

We offer a comprehensive range of minimally invasive general surgical procedures including inguinal and femoral hernia repair, hiatus hernia repair, keyhole gallbladder surgery, anti-reflux surgery, carpal tunnel release, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and diagnostic manometry and pH studies. We also offer robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci system.

Minimally invasive surgery, also known as keyhole or laparoscopic surgery, uses small incisions and a camera to perform the operation. This approach typically results in less pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, smaller scars, and earlier return to work and normal activities compared to traditional open surgery.

Recovery time varies depending on the procedure. For keyhole hernia repair and gallbladder surgery, most patients return to light activities within 1-2 weeks and resume full duties within 4-6 weeks. Carpal tunnel release has an even faster recovery. Your surgeon will give you specific guidelines based on your procedure.

A GP referral is required for Medicare rebates to apply. Your GP can refer you to our surgeons for assessment and we will arrange an appointment for you. If you do not have a referral, you are still welcome to contact us to discuss your options.

Many private health insurance policies cover general surgical procedures depending on your level of cover and waiting periods. We recommend checking with your insurer to confirm your coverage. Our team can help you understand your out-of-pocket costs during your consultation.

We use the da Vinci robotic surgical system which provides surgeons with enhanced precision, flexibility, and visualisation. The robot does not perform the surgery independently — your surgeon controls it at all times. Robotic surgery is available for select procedures and may offer advantages in complex cases.

Not all conditions require surgery. During your consultation, our surgeons will assess your symptoms, review any imaging or test results, and discuss all options including conservative management. Surgery is typically recommended when symptoms significantly impact quality of life or when there is a risk of complications without treatment.

You will be admitted to hospital on the day of your procedure. Our surgical team will explain everything before the operation. Most keyhole procedures take 30-90 minutes. After surgery, you will recover in hospital (day surgery or overnight depending on the procedure) before being discharged with clear post-operative instructions.
