Initial Consultation
Week 1Your journey starts with an initial consultation with one of our experienced surgeons. You will need a GP referral for this appointment. We will discuss your weight loss goals, medical history, and determine the best weight loss option for you.
Comprehensive Evaluation
Weeks 2-6Complete medical assessment including blood tests, imaging studies, and consultations with our multidisciplinary team to ensure you are ready for the next steps.
Pre-Surgery Preparation
Weeks 6-84-6 weeks prior – your pre-operative assessment with Specialist Physician. 2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric dietitian. 2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric psychologist. 1 week prior – a consultation with the pre-admission nurse of the hospital. 1 week prior – a final consultation with your surgeon.
Surgery Day
Day of SurgeryMinimally invasive procedure performed by two fellowship trained surgeons using advanced laparoscopic and/or robotic technology. Your operation will give you the ability to control your weight in a way you never could before. However, your operation is just the beginning of the journey of long-term success in controlling your weight.
Ongoing Care & Lifelong Support
OngoingIn the first year after operation we have a specific program in which you will be seen by your surgeon, nurse, exercise professional and dietitian for multiple appointments. We will be supervising your weight loss and issuing guidance and help during this time. It is vital that you attend all your appointments and particularly all your dietitian appointments. 7-10 days post op – Post-operative appointment with LapSurgery Australia's Nurse. 2-3 weeks post op – Consultation with Dietitian. 5-6 weeks post op – Surgeon review. 2.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian and Exercise Professional. 4-5 months post op – Surgeon review. 6 months post op (for gastric bypass) – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test. 6.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian. 12 months post op – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test.

Revisional surgery is more demanding than a first operation because of scarring and altered anatomy, so it belongs with surgeons who do it regularly. Our surgeons have been performing bariatric surgery since 1984 and placed more than 4,000 bands, which means they understand the problems they are now asked to fix. Revisional Surgery Questions Answered by Our Surgeons
A second operation to correct or convert a previous weight loss operation. The most common revisions are converting a gastric band to a sleeve or bypass, and converting a sleeve to a Roux-en-Y bypass or SADI. Revision is performed by keyhole or robotic surgery and most patients go home after 1 to 2 nights.
The usual reasons are weight regain, not losing enough weight in the first place, or a complication of the original operation. After a band that means slipping, erosion, pouch stretching or reflux. After a sleeve it is most often severe reflux or weight regain as the sleeve stretches over time.
With adequate private health insurance, revisional surgery ranges from $10,000 to $15,000, including the surgeon and assistant surgeon, Specialist Physician assessment, psychologist, dietitian and exercise professional. We provide a full written quote at your consultation, after your assessment has shown us what is needed.
Yes. We revise operations performed by other surgeons in Australia and overseas. Bring any operation notes or discharge summaries you have. If you do not have them, we can usually work out what was done from the gastroscopy and imaging.
Somewhat. Scarring from the first operation makes revision technically harder, and the risk of a staple line leak is higher after a band, at roughly 3 to 5 per cent compared with about 1 per cent for a first sleeve. We manage that by assessing carefully first, staging the operation when the stomach needs time to recover, having two bariatric trained surgeons at every revision, and tracking outcomes through the Bariatric Safety Registry. We discuss your individual risks before you decide.
No. You can book an initial consultation without a referral. A GP referral is recommended because it allows a Medicare rebate on the consultation and some health funds ask for one. We can help you arrange a referral if you do not have one.
