Your Keyhole and Robotic Surgeons

LapSurgery Australia was founded on laparoscopic surgery, which is where the name comes from. Our surgeons have performed keyhole bariatric surgery since it became available in Australia and now also operate with the da Vinci robotic system. Two bariatric trained surgeons are in the theatre for every operation, supported by a Specialist Physician, bariatric dietitians, a clinical psychologist, an exercise professional and bariatric nurses.

Keyhole Weight Loss Surgery at a Glance

What laparoscopic means for you, across every operation we perform. Every card links to the full guide.

What Laparoscopic Means

Instead of one large cut, the surgeon works through 4 to 5 small cuts of 1 to 2 centimetres, using a camera and long instruments. The stomach and bowel are operated on inside the abdomen while the surgeon watches on a screen. Keyhole surgery means less pain, less scarring, a shorter hospital stay and a lower risk of wound problems than open surgery.

Keyhole Surgery Questions Answered by Our Surgeons

Yes. Laparoscopic, keyhole and minimally invasive all describe the same approach: operating through small cuts with a camera and long instruments instead of one large opening. Lap is the short form, which is where lap sleeve, lap bypass and lap band come from.

For almost every patient, yes. Keyhole surgery means less blood loss, less pain, a shorter hospital stay, a lower risk of wound infection and hernia, and a faster return to normal life. The operation inside the abdomen is the same; only the way the surgeon reaches it is different.

Both are keyhole surgery through small cuts. In laparoscopic surgery the surgeon holds the instruments directly. In robotic surgery the surgeon sits at a console and controls robotic arms that hold the instruments, with a magnified 3D view and instruments that move with more range than a human wrist. We use the robot where its precision helps most, such as revision surgery and higher BMI patients. Recovery is similar with both.

Usually 4 to 5 small cuts of 1 to 2 centimetres across the upper abdomen, one slightly larger where the removed stomach is taken out during a sleeve. They are closed with dissolving stitches and glue, and fade to faint marks over the first year.

Most patients go home after 1 to 2 nights, are walking the same day as surgery, are doing light activities within 2 weeks and are back to normal, including most jobs, within 4 to 6 weeks. Heavy lifting waits for 6 weeks so the small cuts heal fully.

Nearly everyone. Very rarely, extensive scarring from previous open operations makes keyhole access unsafe and the surgeon may need to convert to open surgery during the operation. We assess this before surgery and discuss it with you if it applies.

We consult in Dandenong North, Berwick, Frankston, Cranbourne and Warragul. Surgery is performed in private hospitals across Melbourne’s south east. You can book online, call (03) 9760 2777 or leave your details on this page.
