How Well Does One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass Work After Ten Years?

A 2026 meta-analysis found that one anastomosis gastric bypass, also called OAGB, produces durable weight loss and meaningful improvements in related health conditions that hold up over at least a decade. The findings offer some of the longest follow up data available for this procedure.
Who Was Studied and for How Long
Researchers pooled results from eight retrospective studies involving 1,729 patients who had undergone OAGB. All studies had a minimum follow up of ten years, with some data reaching fifteen years. Because the studies were retrospective, meaning they looked back at records rather than following patients forward in a controlled trial, the findings reflect general patterns rather than individually matched outcomes.
What the Researchers Found
Total weight loss was around 32% at both the ten year and fifteen year marks, suggesting the results held steady over time rather than fading. Among people who had obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, about 86 in 100 saw that condition resolve. For type 2 diabetes, a condition where the body struggles to manage blood sugar, around 72 in 100 saw resolution.
What the Study Does and Does Not Tell Us
This research draws on studies from multiple settings, but all included studies were retrospective, which means the level of evidence is lower than a randomised controlled trial. Results vary from person to person, and this research reflects group averages rather than what any individual should expect. Not every outcome was reported consistently across all eight studies.
