Can Doctors Predict Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Results Before Surgery?
A 2026 study looked at whether four measurements taken before a gastric sleeve operation could predict who might not reach a standard healthy weight range within the first year after surgery. Researchers found that those four markers, when combined into a single tool, gave a reasonably accurate prediction.
Who Was Studied and for How Long
The study followed 257 people with obesity who had a gastric sleeve, also called sleeve gastrectomy, at a single hospital in China between January 2021 and August 2024. Researchers tracked their weight for up to one year after surgery. Patients were grouped by whether their body mass index, or BMI, fell below 25 within that first year.
What the Researchers Found
Four measurements taken before the operation turned out to be the key predictors: body weight, the amount of fat stored around the internal organs (called visceral fat area), and two markers that reflect how the body manages insulin. When these were combined into a prediction model, it correctly identified outcomes in roughly 86 out of 100 cases in the main testing group. Results did vary from person to person, and weight loss outcomes after gastric sleeve surgery differ between individuals.
What This Study Does and Does Not Tell Us
Because this research was carried out at one hospital in China, results may not apply equally to all patient groups elsewhere. The study was also retrospective, meaning researchers looked back at existing records rather than running a controlled trial. The model is described as a support tool for clinical assessment, not a definitive answer for any individual.
