Questions Answered by Our Bariatric Surgeons

Bariatric surgery is an operation that changes your stomach, or your stomach and small bowel, so you feel full sooner and eat less. The main operations we perform in Melbourne are sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, one anastomosis gastric bypass and SADI. The Allurion balloon is a non surgical option for patients who are not ready for surgery.

With adequate private health insurance, sleeve gastrectomy ranges from $7,500 to $8,000, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass from $10,000 to $13,000 and revisional surgery from $10,000 to $15,000. Our self pay sleeve program ranges from $20,500 to $22,500 for selected patients without private health insurance. Your package includes the surgeon and assistant surgeon, Specialist Physician assessment, psychologist, dietitian and exercise professional. We provide a full written quote at your consultation.

You may qualify from a BMI of 35, or from 30 if you have a condition such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, high cholesterol, gout or liver disease. For patients of Asian descent the thresholds are 32.5 and 27.5. Use the BMI calculator on this page for a quick check, then book a consultation to confirm.

There is no single best operation. Sleeve gastrectomy is the most common bariatric operation in Australia and suits most patients. Gastric bypass is often preferred where there is reflux or type 2 diabetes. The balloon suits patients who want a temporary, non surgical option. Your surgeon will recommend the operation that fits your health, your weight and your goals.

All surgery carries some risk, including bleeding, infection and reactions to anaesthetic. We reduce risk with keyhole and robotic techniques and by having two bariatric trained surgeons at every operation. Our outcomes are tracked through the Bariatric Safety Registry, and we discuss the specific risks of your operation with you before you decide.

No. You can book an initial consultation without a referral. A GP referral is recommended because it allows a Medicare rebate on the consultation and some health funds ask for one. We can help you arrange a referral if you do not have one.

We consult in Dandenong North, Berwick, Frankston, Cranbourne and Warragul. Surgery is performed in private hospitals across Melbourne’s south east. You can book online, call (03) 9760 2777 or leave your details on this page.
